Fairgoers tell us why it's recession-proof

Hard times can't kill the county fair. Even if they have less money or even no job this year, a visit to the Elkhart County Fair is a tradition most fair-goers are not willing to give up.

"It's for the kids," many of them told us, especially the children who work hard all year to win a 4-H ribbon or wait for the thrill of going on the rides.

Still, though, many families are cutting back, entering less cattle for show competitions or simply buying fewer snacks.

Below are some of our conversations with fair-goers, recorded by producers Barbara Raab and Anna Bloom:

I always go to our county fair.  It's cheaper than Disney/Six Flaggs, there's more stuff to look at and the food is great!  I know it's not "high tech" but even though I'm a younger woman, I still find it a nice way to spend the day.  And we get great musicians playing at the Fair so it's always a good value.  As a starving artist, it's important to get as much out of my money as is possible and for that you can't beat a county fair.

The Western Washington Fairgrounds is practically just down the street from me. It is home of the Puyallup Fair, one of the largest annual fairs in the world. Even so, as a single without family, I find motivation to attend scarce. Nevertheless, there is always a chance that I will attend. Usually I think about going but ultimately do not. When it comes to entertainment however, there is no doubt that the fair is an American tradition which we cannot afford to surrender, good times or otherwise.
