Blogging the Elkhart fair

Msnbc.com staffers set up the tent at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair on Thursday.

The Elkhart Project is at the fair!

That would be the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, which began Friday and runs through July 25. Along with all the attractions you would expect from one of the biggest county fairs in the country, members of our staff are on hand, manning our very own msnbc.com "booth" (actually two tents).

There are a few reasons why we're at the fair:

-- We want to introduce The Elkhart Project to people who may not be familiar with our reporting initiative, which aims to tell the story of the national recession through this hard-hit northern Indiana community.

-- We want to hear from the locals how they are getting by in these tough economic times and use their responses to inform our reporting going forward. NBC News' "Green Machine," a green-powered SUV with live-video capabilities, also will be parked nearby, giving NBC News and MSNBC Cable the opportunity to hear from our reporters and some of the interesting people we've met during our time in Elkhart.

-- We want to give something back to the community. Fairgoers who take the time to fill out a brief questionnaire will receive free personal portraits. Selections of these portraits also will be displayed via a real-time "Faces of the Fair" slideshow on a screen in the booth and may also be published in the Elkhart Project.

You'll hear more about goings-on at the fair in the days to come in this blog and in a report next week on how county fairs can act as economic barometers.

In the meantime, if you're attending the fair stop by and say "hi." We're just outside the 4-H Exhibition Hall, nestled up against a scarecrow exhibit, and just a stone's throw from Nedderman's Tip Steak stand and Rosie's taco stand. Look for the corn dog the size of a water heater, which graces a concession stand just two doors down.

The work msnbc is doing here actually shows just a part of what is happening across the nation. Obama brought us to the frontlines cause we were losing a 1000 jobs a week last summer! Our downturn began much earlier than that with the gas prices going thru the roof. I myself hasn't worked a 40 hr week since Mar of last year. Times are tough! Elkhart was humbled when the trucks showed up here to hand out the food and things and then Elkhart began their hope. We have have pride here. But then again, Americans have that pride when times are tough! We are just a small group of people who want to work! The jobs aren't here. We can't afford to move to them jobs . We will come back! Thanks msnbc for being here!

We have cut costs, lived off of savings. Found whatever sales or garage sales to help out. We are MORE fortunate than others in our community. Every day we see more homes vacant, more jobs lost, still we have hope! That is what msnbc also shows HOPE!

Project Elkhart is like porn. If you don't want to see it then don't look at it. I will reiterate. Me, my mother, and one of my daughters were all born in the same hospital in Elkhart. Unless you've read about the city's history, you have no clue what it has done for the growth of our nation. This goes beyond the RV industry. Many don't know about the railroad system that was once a hub to the western US. I had to leave during the first Gulf War due to my now ex-husband and I both being laid off. Now the problems are 10 fold. I have my own family having to lay off other family members just to survive. That's sad. This woman has a heart of gold and I'm sure it ripped her apart to have to do that. I'm proud that MSN has chosen this city to follow through the recession our country is having to endure. I'm sure there are other cities just as worthy, but no one can understand why this city was chosen unless they know something about it. Thank you MSN for featuring our 4-H fair. That fair has been in my family's life for as long as I can remember and is the best fair I've ever attended in my entire life. I don't even go to fairs anymore because none compare to the memories I have as a kid going there. Go MSN!!!!
