Selling pride for (non)profit

Image: Elkhart t-shirts

John Makely / msnbc.com

A local company creates t-shirts emblazoned with the words Elkhart -- My choice for the Future. The proceeds go to a local charity of the buyer's choice. Stephanie Patka, left, and Lisa Rhinesmith of Burston Marketing, Inc.

Elkhart is nothing if not proud -- and proudly entrepreneurial. So perhaps it was inevitable that an enterprising local would eventually monetize that trait -- the one commodity that does not appear to be in short supply.

This month, a local company started printing shirts declaring: "Elkhart: My Choice for the Future," and plans to funnel the profits into overburdened nonprofit groups in the community.

"What it symbolizes is that we are not down and out," Lisa Rhinesmith, a spokesperson for Elkhart-based Burston Marketing says of the shirt. "We have a lot of entrepreneurs here and a lot of creative thinkers, and this is a way to boost that again."

As Burston Marketing considered ways to help in its recession-stricken community, the T-shirt project emerged as a natural fit; the company already makes logo wear and promotional products. So the Elkhart shirt was designed, and Rhinesmith started knocking on doors at charities to promote the fundraising idea. Nine groups, from the Red Cross to the Humane Society, have begun taking orders, and the project remains open to others groups.

Many local nonprofits have been stretched thin, with demand for services soaring and fundraising floundering, as reported in the Elkhart Project on June 5.

Customers can order the $13.50 shirts through participating charities, which would then receive $2.70 per shirt ordered, or by ordering online through Burston , which will pass $1.50 per shirt to nonprofits chosen by the company. (Rhinesmith says the company is not profiting from the shirts, which are made by a U.S. manufacturer.)

"What we really want people to do is contact the charities, because it benefits (the charity) more. And which possibly gets them more involved in that charity," says Rhinesmith. "But for convenience, they can order through our Web site or they can walk in here."

Ideally, if the project is to gain momentum, the Elkhart tees will not merely collect dust at the bottom of a drawer with freebies from past company picnics.

"We want people to wear them," says Rhinesmith. "We want them to express that this community is important to them. By them buying the shirt, financially it will help the charities that help the residents, but by wearing it, they are making a statement."

Yes, they are nice, but I hope that purchasing one won't lead to a barrage of more "correspondence" from other Elkhart-related projects (similar to making one donation to the March of Dimes - or whatever - and receiving tons more requests in the mail).

Very nice looking shirts for a good cause, though.

The fact that these people seem to have an aversion to profit-making activities is nothing to be proud of. They seem not to realize that if they devoted their energies and resources towards making more money and growing as a business, they could help many more people instead of subsidizing charities that do nothing to create growth.

How about people just send the money to the organization without bothering with ANOTHER t-shirt. Instead of donating a portion of what would be sent, why not directly send the whole amount. Who needs another t-shirt. Really!

Warm fuzzies and a feeling of pride for causing $2.70 to go to a charity? It'll take a LOT of sales to "make a difference". If a charity sells 100 shirts, they bring in a paltry $270, and think of the staff time and effort to make those 100 transactions... I agree with the person who said, why not donate the whole $13.50 price to the charity and forget the shirt? The logos of the charities are not even on it, so it doesn't help them in the future at all beyond the $2.70!!

Actually, the shirts work nicely. And, its quite a bit more effective than a strict for-profit concept. Why?

                            A) Free coverage. Hello! MSNBC is covering it, people from the site are buying it, and they're getting exposure. I can't even imagine how much it would COST me to have this kind of exposure for my business.

                            B) Supporting American Jobs- if the t-shirts are made in the US, and printed through their in-house system, you're supporting the people who make the shirts as well as those who print them, and other suppliers involved. Granted, its a non-profit venture, but profit is generally defined as the money made above and beyond costs. So no, the company might not be pocketing anything, but they're likely paying out wages for the workers in the company as well as supplies to do this. And no, it won't save the US, but most people don't realize all it takes is a bit of consistency to make ends meet for a business. I'm happy for regulars who spend a few bucks a day as opposed to one person in once who spends a boat load; the boat load is nice, but a dozen folks spending a little bit each day adds up much faster.

                            C) Advertising. Again, the shirts are branded with the city name & logo, you're going to talk it up when you wear it. You're effectively paying them to advertise for them. Generally, I hate that kind of thing (IE Abercrombie & Fitch shirts that are nothing but your everyday t-shirts with their logo on it), but in this case its worth doing a bit of advertising for.

                            D) Taxes. These shirts can be written off as charitable donations for everyone involved and lighten the tax burden of the company as well. Also a good thing for a small business, as we're taxed out our rear as it is.

So yea. Its generally a win all around. The charities make money they might not have anyway, so $13 or $3, if you're not going to get it you're just not going to get it. Beats nothing. Supports a small business, which in turn supports that businesses suppliers, and it lightens overhead for the company in question.

I think this is hilarious. I know the cost of that T-shirt. I know the cost of a 2 color front imprint and I know that this company Burston is making MONEY along with publicity by doing this because their cost break down DOES NOT add up! Not knocking the publicity part, I think that part is ingenious, however I have an issue with lying. I think it's BS to promote this kind of activity when there is really no truth to their claims. I know this to be a fact because I am a member of the same industry they are and that makes me sick to my stomach. I can't imagine promoting my company that way and by Burston proclaiming they aren't making any money off the shirts it makes me cringe. I live in Elkhart County so thanks for being just like our government Burston! Thanks for making people believe in one thing when in reality it's another. This is sick....

As far as ripping off the people in this county who are already hurting it's horrible.....the solution you ask? Spend your $13.50 on something that's actually benefiting the people in this community and not on people who disguise the truth for their own benefit.

Burston Marketing has enjoyed reading the many comments posted, but would like to specifically address the concerns and skepticism of ‘hopenprayers’…

Elkhart has been in the news lately – with stories mostly focusing on the negative side of living in our city. Our intent with this campaign was to ‘speak out’ about the positive side of our great little community. After all - it is OUR hometown! It is where WE live, where our parents and grandparents have lived, and where our children and grandchildren will live – and thrive! This campaign speaks to those issues – by simply wearing a t-shirt where we proudly proclaim our confidence and trust in a community that has well supported us for many generations.

For us here at Burston, this was not a leap of faith – but a show of faith! It was never a campaign created for monetary profits – it was a campaign created to support and reaffirm US… the people who make Elkhart the great place it is! To recoup our costs would be beneficial; however, it was not the focus of this campaign. With that being said, below we have briefly outlined areas of expense we have incurred in bringing this from conception to completion.

                                  • Campaign Plan & Promotion
                                  • American Made T-Shirt
                                  • Screens & Set-Up
                                  • Screen Printing (2-Color Water Based Imprint)
                                  • Private Label of Tee
                                  • Art/Graphic Design
                                  • Webpage Design
                                  • Website Set-Up
                                  • Employee Wages – for those who participated in Campaign (Sales, Customer Service, etc.)
                                  • Inventory Overhead

We believe in Elkhart… and it’s our choice for the future!

Our industry knows what you are doing, not the public.

You forgot to add the toilet paper cost from your restroom....all BS costs...all of it.

Website set up, graphic design, private label, campaign plan and promotion, blah blah blah...OMG!

Your cost was the T-shirt, screens and ink application. The rest is nonsense.

Your T-shirt price for the made in USA tee is roughly $2.85.

Your screen charges (esp if you are doing it in house) would be no more than $10.00 each

Your imprint charges per tee would be no more than $1.00 per t-shirt if you did a minimum of only 72 pcs...

so let's do the math shall we at 72 pcs! $2.85 + 0.28 / tee for the screens + 1.00 for the imprint = $4.13...

So $13.50 eh? And you are donating how much to local charities??? I'm pretty sure it wasn't anywhere near the $9.00 mark!

Is that what you would normally charge your clients for a 2 color imprint for 72 pcs? Pathetic!

Bottom line is that you are lying to the people in this County....you said (and I quote)

Rhinesmith says the company is not profiting from the shirts, which are made by a U.S. manufacturer.

That's a BUNK statement and you are leading people to believe that you are not profiting....That's what sad.....that you are from here. Have you thought about running for office?

Wonderful reply, Burston Marketing! I was kinda wondering what hopenprayers was griping about and was he/she comparing apples to apples? (As in comparing Burston to a carnival tshirt imprint setup!) Thanks for believing in Elkhart!

Hey, I see martin's supermarkets have the shirts in their stores. I guess they think it is a good idea too.

That's where I bought mine this morning! Paid $16.99 for it though. I thought they'd be $13.50.

To hopeanprayers - isn't the point of the Elkhart Project to let the world know about the 17% unemployment rate and how people need to make money and earn a living? If Burston earns a (OMG) PROFIT from doing business thereby earning a living, aren't they just doing what Americans should do and want to do, aka work and be able to live a little? Oh, and if they give some money to charity along with it, isn't that what Americans should also do?

By the way, hopeanprayers, how much have you given to help your neighbors, either personally or through your business? Just curious....

Good point anniev, all I have heard from hopeanprayers is a lot of complaining.

(Rhinesmith says the company is not profiting from the shirts, which are made by a U.S. manufacturer.)

Hmmmmmhow many times does this have to come up! They are lying! In black and white...I've said it before and I'll say it again...marketing stragedy is GENIOUS! Lying to the residents of this County is BS and the lowest of the low. I think we are all pretty much aware of the 17% unemployeement rate in this county. I think the whole nation is with the coverage of MSNBC. I would rather donate $13.50 straight to a charity rather than to the pockets of crooks who obviously care about only themselfs and NOT the residents of this county....

What have I done? A lot on my own. I'm a single Mom who has donated hundreds to the Boys n Girls Club locally, help with Habitat for Humanity, was a member of AmeriCorps, I worked the Food Drives, take my kids to the old Bayer building and put the boxes of food together with my children, every weekend I try to VOLUNTEER 100% of my FREE time to things and people that matter. Not to benefit myself but to benefit others. My family has also resided in this community for over 100 years. They have spent thousands of dollars and donated more time and effort in building this community than I have. Buying a T-shirt who's company profits about $9.00 off of and then donates a couple of bucks makes what difference....NONE. It's like me buying a pair of Guess jeans in the 80's because I wanted to be cool in school.

Bottom line is they are lying about their profits. Just do the Math.
