Turning to eBay to make ends meet

When Elkhart resident Brad Warlick found himself without a job and on unemployment for the first time in 35 years, he decided to try and bring in a few extra dollars by putting his skills as a handyman to use on the Internet.

The strategy worked, and Warlick, whose online handle is "Broke Brad," is getting by in part by refurbishing items and selling them on eBay and Craigslist.

Warlick told South Bend TV station WSBT that he had recently found new homes for an old paddleboat and skis and made a tidy profit by fixing up an Indiana University glass souvenir that he bought for $20 and eventually sold on eBay for $350.

He scours flea markets and Goodwill stores for items that he can repair or restore. "There's a market for anything," he said.

Warlick said he and his family have had to cut some corners with the recession, but that the online sales have helped them through this rough spell. "It hasn't been a terrible hardship," he said. "We saw this coming a couple of years ago with my job. With the RV industry, it just doesn't last forever."

Asked by CNBC's Melissa Francis in an interview this week whether he's considered moving to find a new job, Warlick said he hasn't even thought about leaving Elkhart.

"We own the property we live on now, it was actually my great-grandparents' property," he said. "We like the area and we're here to stay. The RV and the auto industry will come back. Maybe not as strong as it was years ago, but it will always be there. I'll just do whatever I got to do to fit into that plan."

This is the kind of story that is uplifting. It is a factual representation of what is happening in Elkhart but at the same time showing what can be done even in hard times. Mr. Warlick's efforts and thinking outside the box are an individual example of the American Spirit. The Spirit that gets this country through even the hardest times.

Thank you for the article and thank you Mr. Warlick for sharing your story.

This is similar to what I am doing since I have been unable to "work" a regular job in construction since 2003 when I was involved in a motorcycle accident and broke my back. I am paralyzed from the waist down and even though I am a construction manager no one will hire me due to my disablity and inability to go out onto a construction project.

I decided a little while back to sell those items that I could no longer use (i.e., bicycle, rollerblades) and found ebay the perfect venue to sell these items.

Although I am not making enough to live on I am reducing to clutter in my house and garage. The little I do make does come in handy.

Mr. Warlick has given me a new idea on making more income. Thank you sir!

Good luck to Mr Warlick as far as selling on eBay is concerned. With eBay's fee structure, i.e. fairly high listing fees and final value fees, as well as PayPal's commisions on the total, it's very difficult to make any kind of profit if you're a casual seller. They stick it to you coming and going. You need to be one of their coddled "Power Sellers" in order to get a break and make any serious money.

It's rather amazing to me to compare the negative responses on both sides of the comments on the blog connected to the article about Warren Buffet's opinion on the state of the economy and where it is headed. I felt awful inside after reading negative comment after negative comment: blaming President Obama, blaming President Bush, blaming the rich people, blaming the poor people, and on and on.

What an absolute relief, reading this story and how someone is finding his way through adversity using his own creativity. And his attitude is not one of blame. Even experiencing what is still difficult times, he has a lilt in his voice at the end of the video. I think there's a good lesson here about making lemonade out of lemons and stopping the blame game. The first cliche solves, and the latter cliche just drags everything down more. I agree totally with you, Elva's 1st.

Yes, but the USA needs some industry... we can't continue as only with service based jobs. People can only buy and sell so much stuff! Ask the politicians that sold all our jobs offshore starting with Ronald Reagan! In order for our economy to survive we needs to create industry. Until this happens, we will continue to flounder & unemployment/crime/prices will continue to get worse.

It's great to hear these stories of how eBay has helped others too. I'm unemployed now myself from the "foreclosure " industry, I came across an amazing amount of "junk" in the the foreclosed houses we cleaned out. There is always somebody somewhere that whats something you have.

Don't forget that Ebay and PayPal are money laundering organizations and are owned and operated by Organized Crime!
