Elkhart County no longer has the state's highest unemployment rate. That dubious distinction belongs to Howard County, home to Kokomo, according to new state figures broken down by Marilyn Odendahl in The Elkhart Truth.
The Department of Workforce Development reported today that joblessness in Elkhart County dropped slightly in May, to 17.5 percent from 17.8 percent in April. That was still bad enough for No. 2.
Statewide, joblessness rose to 10.4 percent, a full point above the April figure and more than double from a year ago. NBC station WTHR of Indianapolis says Workforce Development Commissioner Teresa Voors blamed furloughs and layoffs in the auto industry and warned that a ripple effect from suppliers, dealers and others could continue to hurt the state for some time.
