Getting savvy about seeking jobs

If there is a silver lining to be found in the dark cloud that is the nation's soaring unemployment rate, it may be that Americans are getting better at looking for new lines of work.

In Elkhart, Ind., which has one of the nation's highest unemployment rates at 19.6 percent, many of those who have lost their jobs are finding strength in numbers. Instead of hitting the pavement solo, they are helping one another through the difficult financial and emotional times.

"It can be a very humbling experience," Greg Wilkerson, a former sales and marketing executive, said of being unemployed -- or as he puts it, "in transition" -- for 15 months, apart from the occasional consulting gig.

(You can read about how Elkhart's heavy dependence on the RV industry landed it in this mess in the latest installment of The Elkhart Project, "Industrial diversity is hard to do," by msnbc.com's Allison Linn.)

As the months between paychecks mounted, Wilkerson got involved with People Between Jobs, a support and networking group sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart that urges its members to focus not just on their own search, but also on what they can do for others.

Wilkerson says the group's members come from the factory floor as well as executive offices, although lately he's seen more jobless white-collar workers showing up. For some, the group provides a chance to network and share tips on job searches; for others, it's a chance to empathize with others in the same plight.

But most important, experts say, such groups increase the prospects of landing a job.

"Networking is absolutely the best way to look for a job," Bill Warren, founder of Monster.com and now executive director of the nonprofit DirectEmployers Association told msnbc.com. "I've seen it work too many times and seen too many studies to say otherwise."

He said online job hunting sites like the which his organization runs in alliance with the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, should be considered supplemental to those in person efforts.

"That always raises eyebrows when I say that because of my background with Monster.com," Warren said.

Rich Hobbie, executive director of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, agreed that the self-help groups are effective, noting that they in many ways mimic one-stop career centers that many states have established to help laid-off workers get back to work. He cited a 2009 study by Brookings Institution economist Louis S. Jacobson that found such centers result in roughly $2 in savings for every $1 invested in providing counseling services.

"The savings are the results of lowering the duration on unemployment insurance," Hobbie said. "...There's a benefit to the unemployment trust fund and a benefit to them, because they go back to work sooner, and they earn more."

People Between Jobs and the Michiana Career Network, a similar group that Wilkerson helped launch in nearby South Bend, are taking on that role in Elkhart County, providing free job-search training sessions and sharing information about retraining opportunities.

So too is a support group operating out of the River Oaks Community Church in nearby Goshen, which was recently  profiled in the Elkhart Truth.

Wilkerson sees participation in such groups as a way for job seekers to take responsibility for their situation rather than relying on the government to bail them out. And he said such groups are looking to extend their reach by working with other non-governmental entities, including churches and nonprofits.

"What we're trying to do is build a network of organizations that will assist each other and not duplicate efforts ... that will help as many people as possible," he said.

Whether that help can sustain Wilkerson remains to be seen.

After 15 months of chasing empty leads, he says he is ready to leave the area if his plans to start an insurance and financial services company in the area don't work out. He says many other workers are growing similarly disenchanted, feeling that local officials are banking too heavily on a revival of the staggering RV industry.

"A lot of people are wondering what's going to really change here?" he said.

Elkhart's experience with rampant unemployment is hardly unique. What's it like to be unemployed and looking for a job in your community? What's the best strategy for finding a new job in tough times? Are you considering leaving your hometown to look for a job where the opportunities may be greater? Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

Good article on the power of networking. In the spirit of making very vociferous denunciations of all the negative energy that we are constantly plugged into: I'll share some positive and some simple pleasures that are keeping me smiling while job hunting.

  • Ask and you shall receive- practice Laws of Attraction - have patience
  • Refine your resume and tailor for specific jobs- most skills learned are portable to other industries
  • Research on Top Companies – visit companies websites, read press and investment news, new products, restructures, set up free search agents and read their updates
  • Eliminate time-consuming tasks that take you off focus-
  • Schedule stress relief breaks – music, museums on free days , conversation with people not related to job search- volunteering - organize eliminate clutter in your life
  • Network to cultivate relationships – Set up an excel sheet to record every contact networking, prospect, general- stay in touch with a contact so they don’t forget I am still searching, If you don't know excel take a class at your local library or keep a written log of your contacts
  • Track contacts & follow up ( this is a personal weak area for me. I need not to be shy on follow-up or feel rejected with no response. It is hard to ask for what you need . It is something we need to practice. As the old adage goes" the baby that doesn't cry doesn't get fed"
  • Diversify your job hunt methods e.g. explore survival jobs, check off beat sites for jobs like snag job, flip dog, PJ Scout, Craigslist . If survival jobs aren't available explore volunteer jobs.
  • Follow-up on all leads focus the most energy on leads most likely to be hot leads
  • Keep reference list updated and references updated periodically on progres
  • Take pleasure in the small things to stay positive- give and recieve smiles and kind words generously

Inhale Love, Exhale Peace,And Be Happy !

    Judy

The RV industry has seen its best days. If the Elkhart workforce could get into altering vehicles to alternative fuels, it would be a good start.

At a time when I am out of work but only two years from being eligible for social security, if that really is security is debatable, I do find your being positive a most wonderful aspect of life. Thank you for taking the time to comment, your advice is welcome and given me more avenues of search while also confirming what I have already doing in my search. I am sorry that your area is experiencing such high unemployment, I thought Rhode Island was disgraceful but I was wrong. Maybe I am wrong about the disgraceful thought as well.

    Keep your head high!

    Judy, Thanks

Very Good Thoughts!!! ... to which I want to add - never give up. As is written on the side of every Daruma doll in Japan "Though I may fall down seven times I will always get up the eighth time!" It is SOOOO easy to buy into the jabber from others about age discrimination and being past your prime. For those that are over 50 don't buy it! Re-invent your frame of reference and learn to see and value your experience. Don't focus on the pieces alone (specific job skills) but more on how you put them together (project management, project planning, program management, team building, leadership, etc.) Everyone who's made it this far has SOMETHING to offer in the "putting pieces together" category. I speak from practical experience - I'm 57 and just started a new job two months ago as a senior systems architect and program manager and it pays well.

Success is about what YOU believe in - starting with yourself. If it was easy everyone would be doing it :-)

Instead of bailing out the banks, the government should have paid off every mortgage in the country and they still would've had money left over. It would've put a stop to all the toxic loans. Money would've been flowing into the economy at a massive rate. Just think...if your home was paid off, you'd have a ton of disposable income and since you would lose your mortgage write off on your income taxes, the government would be able to collect more revenue. But NO. Obama and his Treasury Secretary are absolute BOOBS!

I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers, but it doesn't seem like your assertion could possibly be true. It's like those rumors that went around that if they just gave the money out equally to every American, we'd all get $200k or whatever - when people actually stopped to do the math, it turned out to be more like $2500 - which would barely have covered some mortgage payments, let alone paid off any mortgages. Also, I take it from your rather non-clever criticism of Obama and his staff that you are a Republican, and probably a support of the King of all boobs, Dubya. Don't forget - Obama has only been in office a few months... this all came about in the last 8 years or so... and most of the stimulus had already been put together before Obama was even in charge.

I am 60 years old and been unemployed for a year and a half. I'm supposed to be getting unemployment benefits from Florida and they keep sending me notices that I am eligible, but I don't get any money. Can't get them on the phone, so I wrote a letter and was told I would get six weeks because of the extension, but once again I got nothing. I'm too old to hire and too young to retire. I have given up on finding work because nobody will hire me at my age, so I am trying to scratch out a living as an entrepreneur, but that's not paying the bills. I moved to NJ from FL a year ago with the promise of a job that didn't turn out and now I'm going back to Florida. Can't afford another moving truck, so I'm selling everything. I did everything right, went to night school for years to earn two degrees and still everything has gone wrong. It's painful and I feel that big corporations are the only "constituents" while the rest of us don't matter. Frankly, I don't even feel part of this country anymore. The last job ad I read said first consideration would be given to bilingual candidates - oh that figures.

Kathleen, Have you applied for your benefits? In my state you have to go to the State unemployment office and fill out an application and interview face to face. After you apply there is a wait and it is long because they are overwhelmed. 60 is not old, it is mature, and companies value that because it translates to reliability and mentoring for young employees. You have a lot to offer I'm sure, don't give up.

Even if you can't find work don't quit LIVING. Most jobs are found through networking so going to church, visiting friends, participating in hobbies and volunteering, while they may not pay are looking for a job.

Maybe your job search is like looking for love. Trying hard does work and leads to bitterness and frustration, but when relax and breath a little you end up finding a job where you least expect it.

Sixty is a funny age. Young people grow up consistantly, but on the other end people age so differently. If your healthy your not really elderly, (think of a little old lady with a walker and bad osteoperosis). Some people should have retired long ago at 60, others have 15 years left before they notice the strain.

Older people are better at working with the frail elderly. Older middle aged people are slower, more patient, and have more empathy (and experience) with the indignities of aging than the young. My dad worked as a pharacist servicing board and care homes for the eldley and developmentally disabled for 20 years. He once told me people need to be over 40-50 really to a good job caring for the frail elderly.

Where I live now the unemployment rate locally is about 25%, we've topped the forclosure rate list off and on for the last too years. Health care is still hiring, for home health aids and staff at board and care or guest homes for the elderly. To be honest the pay is miserable, minimum wage, maybe a little more. The hours are flexible, and part time work is availible because the homes have to have someone with the clients 24/7.

The FACTS for Elkhart. Your local/RV recession occurs within the CONTEXT of a state, regional national recession; in the midst of a global COLLAPSE. Fact 1, the JOBS lost on most all these levels in the US will NOT be returning; as the "shadow banking" lending's bubble will as well not be returning, for at least a decade. Next is, Fact 2, Plan A for the US economy TARP/ARRA are not working, except nominally.
Fact 3, Obama has no strategy to achieve long term growth, he making up the articulation as they go along and discover the depth/breadth of the crisis, on both a national and global scale.
Fact 4, Obama said in recent days when taken together all that the government is doing it's to be seen in the context of a long term vision for growth that is "a foundation for growth." And that his strategy has five points. This is mistake because he has no "prescription" as the NEW central organizing principle; that's Econ. 101. Even Elkhart children are writing the President letters asking he do the things outlined in my Slide Show macro economic "SOLUTION" for creating JOBS nationally .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz2-MaZH-78

Fact 5, The US and world capital market(s) are in a holding pattern, waiting to move forward first on the big "sell off" massive "reallocation" of the market's assets from the old model to the NEW economic paradigm model, methods of organizing and work; as a function of its NEW sun-rise industries and vehicles (companies). As ONLY this will restore CONFIDENCE as its says clearly we know where we are, where we're going, why and how to get there.
Fact 6, Housing and consumer spending COLLAPSED at the same time and thus did everything else. The NEW eeconomic paradigm's NEW model and methods will restore honor, trust and integrity to housing and balance consumer spending, while creating an entirely NEW macro sector of the US economy, that will grow over several decades to become larger than Housing/Consumer Spending combined.
Fact 6, Obama is a good man, although it's to be noted he's ONLY as good as his advisers and all of them are academic derivatives of the "meta analysis" policy that is today failing; when what is needed is the "meta narrative" policy and program(s) of the NEW prescription of wealth creation and this they've NOT only missed, when told about it they DENY its validity and keep the nation and its President and the world "behind the curve" to everyone's peril.
Fact 7, Obama says "we cannot go back" to an economy built on sand. What he's weak on saying absolutely clearly, is we were all lying, to our self, to one another, family, community and nation(s) and this too was a big part of what produced the global "crisis of culture" that brought the COLLAPSE of the world economy and its capital market(s).
Fact 8, It's NOT a coincidence that communism and capitalism COLLAPSED as both were mega ppsychosocial lies, to their people, wholesale and retail.
Fact 9, Obama is a very good and honest adn capable man, although he's a politican and secular in philosophy, yet a man of faith. What America and the world need is a spiritual leader whose close to God and is a social scientist who can "prescribe" what today creates macro sustainable wealth, HOW and what programs must be mandated, organized, funded, developed, implementned and acculturated to bring us forward to a Blessed, sustainable and prosperous future, for America and all mankind.
Fact 9, this needs Humanomics(sm) NEW East west "convergence model" and its NEW "Receiving, to give(sm)" and its NEW economic paradigm the "Integration of Labor(sm)."
Fact 10, this is a moverment and "branding" Humanomics(sm) and its new economic model as the SOLUTION has already begun globally and this is what we all need to learn and work to bring about.
Fact 11, this depends more on you than President Obama, its requires more than money its compels commitment to you, your family and community and nation and mankind.
Fact 12, lead yourself and President Obama and the US Congress and the people of America will follow in mass, as noting less is required.
Fact 13, at 66 I'm told a world spiritual leader will soon emerge from Jerusalem, be Jewish, be recognized and accepted, and for this too I'm ready.
Fact 14, this needs you, your family and community lleading us forward to tomorrow, jsut like the 8 year olds in Elkhart and Goshem who wrote me that they've begun writing letters to President Obama.
Fact 15, start "branding" Humanomics(sm) NOW view the videos on YouTube channel yyba1 and subscribe and rate them and its Slide Show and follow Yehoshua on Tweeter, amd on Facebook and on MySpace and on Friendfeed, and on Digg and on Newsvine, and on MacroTech-sm, and on AOL, and on Delicious and on SU and Flickr and on Linkedin adn in the search engines Google, Altavista and all of them and on Yahoo and on Metacafe and on MSM and on Orkut and on Wis.dm and on Bebo and Friendster and on Shyrock; in a word everyword.
Fact 15, the goal is a billion links, views, blogs, hits, searches, reads, articles, pices, stories and you get the picture HELP, this is your future and Obama cannot do this, he can ONLY listen and follow and he will WHEN YOU LEAD, NOW...
Thank you and most especially your Blessed Children in Elkhart-Goshen Indiana and in all the communities of America.

The last FACT I've most of my life God's Blessings and so I saw very clearly BOTH the "crisis of culture" and the US and world economic COLLAPSE and its economies and capital markets and I left America in despair as did Yona and NOW God commands I help and so I'm back even though I live in Jerusalem, our hearts our with our family and people and all people who needs God's servant's service in helping.

What has happened globally was revealed BEFORE '9-11' was confirmed in that horrific event and subsequently in collateral events in their particular "meta narrative" (meanings) and and composite meaning(s). This is the gift God has Blessed me with to listen, to hear, to understand and eventnually comprehend in humility of his intervention(s).

                  Blessings from Jerusalem

FOR NEWSVINE ON ELKHART-GOSHEN; Edited Version

The FACTS for Elkhart-Goshen IN area, first about your generally local and particular RV recession, as is now occurring within the CONTEXT of a state, regional national recession; in the midst of the larger context of a global economic COLLAPSE.
Fact 1, the JOBS lost on most all of these levels in the US and significantly in the G-20 will NOT be returning; and this is since the "shadow banking" lending practices, that inflated the bubble(s) will as well not be returning, for at least a decade (probably more), while the US, G-20 and world economy “transitions,” to a NEW world economic model and thus economy and order of participation, for all.
Fact 2, Plan A, by President Obama’s team, for the US economy and its TARP and ARRA are not working, if fact neither one is achieving Washington’s demand stimulus goals or hope(s) except in spots and otherwise nominally. We must move on and quickly and this time accurately.
Fact 3, President Obama has no strategy. What he’s calling a strategy is merely a patchwork, created with continuous “rewrites” of the governing campaign script, to sustain his “soft power” acceptance, on the fly, that changes by the day and hour; sometimes of necessity, accomplishes precious little fundamentally, in the hopes of finding the right track, to achieve long term growth, again making up in the articulation(s) as they go along; while in truth they continue to discover the depth and breadth of the crisis, on both a national and global scale. And it’s to noted the lesson yet to be learned is “fast is slow,” and “slow is fast.” What is meant is rushing, often means mistakes, compounding error and being forced to repeat parts or all of the process over and over to get it right. When as the GOP, a more measured approach gets things right the first time and that the meaning of slow is fast.
Fact 4, President Obama said in recent days “when taken together, all that the government is doing, is to be seen in the context of a long term vision,” and so this is "a foundation for growth." And that his strategy has five points. These five points are NOT a strategy, there a wish list contrived to explain and rationalize the President’s agenda that is impossible absent “sustained macro economic growth that actually delivers deficit reduction in serious terms.” And so it is a mistake to believe it is s strategy, it’s NOT. This is proven by the fact that the President has no "prescription" as the NEW central organizing principle to achieve his goals, as if he did, he would say so and this is a strategy; that's Economics: 101. Even Elkhart’s 8 year old children, recognized in Yehoshua’s Slide Shows (linked below) what the White House, advisers and staff, MSM media and economists have all missed; and so they are writing the President letters asking him do the things, that are clearly outlined in the Slide Show they saw, that defines the authentic macro economic "SOLUTION" for creating JOBS locally, nationally and globally ....
                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz2-MaZH-78
Fact 5, The US and world capital market(s) are in a holding pattern, waiting to move forward, first on the big "sell off" as a massive "reallocation" of the market's assets; from the old model and methods of production, to the NEW economic paradigm’s model and methods of work; as a function of its NEW sun-rise industries and vehicles (companies). As ONLY this will restore CONFIDENCE in the market(s), as it says clearly, unambiguously and coherently that we know where we are, why and how we got here, where we're going, and again WHAT we need to do, why and how we ‘together’ will get the goal(s) of sustained growth.
Fact 6, Housing and consumer spending COLLAPSED at the same time and thus did everything else. The NEW economic paradigm's NEW model and methods will ALSO restore the little talked about lost honor, trust and integrity in our economic way of life to housing and that also balances consumer spending, while creating an entirely NEW macro sector of the US economy. One that will grow over several decades to become larger than Housing and Consumer Spending combined.
Fact 7, President Obama is a good man, although it's to be noted he's ONLY as good as his advisers and all of them are academic derivatives of the "meta analysis" policy, they produced and are trying to make work, that is today failing; when what is needed is the "meta narrative" policy and program(s) of the NEW economic paradigm that’s the NEW prescription of wealth creation and this they've NOT only missed, but worse when informed about it, they were dismissive and further they DENY its validity. And sadly this keeps all of us, the nation and its President and the world "behind the curve" to everyone's peril.
Fact 8, President Obama says "we cannot go back" to an economy, ”built on sand.” He’s absolutely correct, only for the wrong reasons, as is proven when measured by his demand stimulus policy, that is actually attempting in large measure, to do precisely that; restore what’s COLLSPED, as it is a fact, that this cannot be and it will NOT be. What also he's particularly weak on saying in absolutely and very clear terms, is we were and still are all lying, to our self, to one another, family, community and nation(s) and this too was, is and remains a very big part of what produced the global "crisis of culture," that brought first the COLLAPSE of the ‘local reality’ that was man’s particular model of mind that was “giving, to receive” and this is what further brought the world economy and its capital market(s) COLLAPSE and this too will NOT be returning.
Fact 9, while in this CONTEXT of Fact 8, it's NOT a coincidence that communism and capitalism COLLAPSED as both were mega psychosocial level lies as was Israel’s Zionism, to their peoples, wholesale and retail all have COLLAPSED despite all the revisionisms. And all this and much more was foretold in the “meta narrative” of ‘9-11’ in 2001; and AFTER it published, by this author, no one listened.
Fact 10, President Obama is a very good, honest and capable man, although he's a politician and secular in philosophy, yet a man of some faith. What America and the world needs NOW and sorely, is a WORLD spiritual leader whose close to God and who also is comprehensively COMPETENT as a social scientist who can "prescribe" and predict the implications of today’s actions and show us the way to what today creates macro sustainable wealth, by showing us HOW to move forward and what programs must be mandated, organized, funded, developed, implemented and acculturated, to bring America and the world forward, to a Blessed, sustainable secure and prosperous future, for all mankind.
Fact 11, to achieve this we need both a spiritual leader and this process, has to become a global movement that recognizes and accepts Humanomics(sm) NEW East west "convergence model" as the enlightened goal(s) for man and mankind; when based on its NEW "Receiving, to give(sm)" as its ‘central organizing principle’ and its NEW economic paradigm the "Integration of Labor(sm)." This is the NEW science and technology way(s) for realizing the global macro economic SOLUTION, for all the nations and mankind.
Fact 12, this movement is already "branding" Humanomics(sm) and its new economic model as the SOLUTION and it has already begun globally and this is what we all need to learn and work to bring about, beginning with the grass roots level in Elkhart – Goshen and all the other communities of need, in America, in the G-20 and around the world. I received many expression of support from all over the world.
Fact 13, this movement NOW depends more on you than President Obama, its requires far more than money, as its compels commitment to you, by you and to your family and community and nation and to all mankind and in this it connects all of as one human family.
Fact 14, lead yourself first, and President Obama and the US Congress and the people of America will follow in mass, as noting less is required and this means NOW. I’m NOT running for office, I already serve the King of Kings, the God of the Cosmos, who is also the God of Israel.
Fact 15, at 66 I'm told a world spiritual leader will soon emerge from Jerusalem, and that he’ll be Jewish, be recognized and accepted globally and some say that this is Yehoshua and so for this too, I'm ready.
Fact 16, this needs you, your family and community leading us forward to tomorrow, just like the 8 year olds in Elkhart - Goshem who wrote me, that they've seen my SLiide Show and have begun writing letters to President Obama requesting that he ACT to deliver what it outlines for them and America and the world.
Fact 17, what is needed for you to do, is start "branding" Humanomics(sm) NOW and this means view the videos on YouTube channel yyba1 and subscribe, rate them and view its Slide Show and follow Yehoshua on Tweeter, and on Facebook and on MySpace and on Friendfeed, and on Digg and on Newsvine, and on the MacroTech-sm wensite, and on AOL, and on Delicious and on Stumble Upon and Flickr and on Linkedin and in the search engines Google, Altavista and all of them and on Yahoo and on Metacafe and on MSM and on Orkut and on Wis.dm and on Bebo and Friendster and on Skyrock; in a word every where on the web and encourage others to as well participate and herein all our future(s) is secure.
Fact 18, the goal is a billion links, views, blogs, hits, searches, reads, articles, pieces, stories and you get the picture and so please HELP as this is your future, as President Obama cannot do this, he can ONLY listen and follow and he will, only WHEN YOU LEAD YOU, and that means NOW...
Thank you and most especially we thank your Blessed Children in Elkhart-Goshen Indiana and in all the communities of America, Ireland, Israel, Canada, Australia, France, Germany Netherlands, Kenya and many other places who are also NOW working on the Humanomics(sm) movement.
Fact 19, the media has done and is doing overall and extremely poor job and so let them know this and hold them publicly accountable. Why is it that NOT a single reporter in the White House Press core, is a trained economist, when the day’s narrative is the ECONOMY, And besides being an economist and Journalist, they need to be a good detective, to be capable, of asking the deeper “prescriptive” and collateral questions to test the leadership’s deeper grasp of what’s involved, why and where it’s leading. Awaken them to the fact that it’s NOT acceptable, what the President that “we’ll just have to wait, and see what the results are” and if I’m wrong, then there will be another President, in four years.” That’s absolutely WRONG! That’s NOT good enough for America since it’s a near certain prescription for failure. The searching questions, that have need to be asked and have NOT as yet been asked, must be immediately, as they will absolutely awaken the President, Congress and American people and the world, to what is the authentic SOLUTION and how we’re all to proceed, with what, doing what and these ANSWERS are still being missing; and this too is absolutely NOT good enough, for the nation’s future, as it places our Blessed people’s lives, families and futures in extreme peril, beyond today’s crisis. And this is because the media simply do not know what’s involved and therefore do not know what to ask. They too just like the President’s advisers are relying on the “official narrative” and its “meta analysis” and both are fundamentally wrong, as neither has defined the authentic problem nor it’s historically unique SOLUTION.
Fact 20, the Washington firemen, first Hank Paulson and now Geithner another Wall Street darling are foxes in the hen house and are NOT proper stewards of the nation’s assets and wealth, who have the people’s interest at heart FIRST; nor is Larry Summers nor Bernake and numerous others; several come from backgrounds of extreme ‘conflict of interests’ that the Congress should have rejected and did NOT. Why they too are a very significant part of the problem; look at the Senate Banking Committee legislative records and it reads like the “bought and paid for” in Washington sewer(s) of public office.

Fact 21, it’s to be noted that all of my life God's Blessings, has been with me and so I saw very clearly BOTH the "crisis of culture" in the US and world, that would bring its “crisis of culture” and COLLAPSE and its economies and capital markets. And so I left America in despair, as did Yona flee Nineveh, and NOW God commands I help and so I am, and I’m back, even though I live in Jerusalem, still our hearts our with our family and people, and all people who need God's servant's service, in helping, NOW.

Fact 22 What has happened globally was revealed BEFORE, '9-11' and was merely confirmed, in that horrific event. And when it was subsequently confirmed in collateral events, in and through their particular "meta narrative" (meanings) and composite meaning(s) and confirmed in writing, this too was ignored.

This is the gift that God has Blessed me with, that is, when I listen, I hear, in the ear within the ear, and I am able to understand and eventually comprehend, in humility, what are the grammar(s) of His intervention(s), why, and what they mean and what man is to do NOW, as well as the implications if we do NOT respond.

                    Blessings, from Jerusalem
                    in "Receiving, to give(sm"

                    Shalom, Tky, Yehoshua

People Between Jobs and Michiana Career Network as well as the other groups mentioned teach skills. Many companies pay for some sort of outplacement training but often it is inadequate. Otherindividuals laid off from their jobs do not receive any help. Particularly in our geographic area, jobs are not advertised and you MUST tap into the "hidden job market"

On April 24 and 30, People Between Jobs and Michiana Career Network presented free networking seminars teaching anyone who wanted to attend how to contact individuals directly who might be able to help in their search. We want to help ourselves and there is a grass roots movement to help job seekers.

Our community is called Michiana because it encompasses Indiana and Michigan. The unemployment rate for this area is similar although Elkhart county has been hardest hit. Although the RV workers have received a lot of publicity, every industry has been affected. I am an IT professional and there are many others like me with jobs outsourced to India.

The groups you see highlighted in this article are teaching unemployed workers how to go about searching for jobs using high-tech tools like linkedin and other tools like letters asking for advise and assistance. There are jobs out there. It is hard but when you get past excuses and statements like "I'm too old"and "no one is hiring", then we get to how do we find jobs in the current climate. If you search for Michiana Career Network, you can find our blog and access all the presentations. These presentations were created by UNEMPLOYED individuals who have had success in their job search. They may not have jobs yet, but they are getting interviews.

When I go to PBJ or Michiana Career Network, I answer three questions. What have you done for your job search (contact employers, how many), what have you done for yourself (how have you taken care of yourself because if you do not keep your spirits up, you will not be successful), and what have you done for others (strongly encourage volunteering with a non-profit of some sort).

We may be receiving unemployment and going through tough times but we are still valuable, strong individuals capable of making a contribution. Elkhart County, St. Joseph County, and the area known as Michiana should not be written off. We are survivors and we will bounce back. That's why they call us the heartland.

Where is this money going to come from? Rail bailout? The infastructure of this entire country is falling apart as well. Meanwhile our scumbag politicians are bought and paid for by corporations and tend to their interests of hoard and greed- not issues that affect the rest of us chumps. Add this to the long list of massive problems that we are past the point of return to remedy. WE are here and exist only to feed the hoard that benefits the few that own us all. No more, no less. Life is just the illusion. Our time is not our own.It has been erased and replaced with what some call" work" so that others lifestyles and accumalation of material things can be acquired. Our existance revolves around that above all.

I own a company in elkhart . We are a supplier to the rv manufacturers in Elkhart. We have laid off about 80 people .We have picked up additional business and are trying to bring back people. More than half the people we called back wanted to stay home on unemployment and choose not to come back to work.I think this is very interesting since Elkhart is in a depression. What do you think of this?

                            JHOONB,

In Florida, where I live and am currently unemployed, if you turn down employment, and that employer reports this fact to the state, your unemployment benefits are suspended. Same thing if you quit a job: you must have extraordinarily good reasons or unemployment benefits are denied. I'm not sure what the situation is in Elkhart. You might want to find out what the rules are up there.

In my case, my unemployment benefit is $190 per week, rendering me effectively out of any market. I recently took a temp job paying $10/hour, which suspends my benefit for the time I am employed. At this job, I earn just about $50 more than merely staying at home on unemployment. Is the work worth that additional $50? Hardly. It is mindless, boring, meaningless work and I can't wait for it to end. That said, if I quit this mindless job, my benefits will be eliminated. Why work, then? Dignity, the opportunity to network with others in similar situations, the benefit of a routine, lots of intangibles besides money. Oh, by the way, staying home means that I could continue to file the 10 to 12 application PER DAY that I currently file. I've done this for seven months and gotten four interviews and no job. I'm not a $10/hour employee, either. I hold two advanced degrees, am a published author and have more than 20 years of teaching, administrative and management experience.

So, you might want to also think about why your laid-off employees are refusing to return to your company. Is the opportunity to work for you again worth more than the opportunity to continue to look for better work? Do you pay well? or at least well enough that it is worth a person's while to return to your company? Support your employees? Reward hard work and loyalty? Such things are powerful incentives to get off unemployment. Or are you the other side of the coin? Examine your conscience and ask some hard questions and maybe you can begin some changes to woo your former employees back. If you believe them to be worth the wooing, of course. If you do, go get 'em!

Hope Elkhart actually looks at these Blogs, this was written by my father in law who recently was laid off after many years of working for General Electric (GE) and has turned to blogging to help him vent and he is very talented and we believe that there may be a place for him somewhere employment wise with his great ideals he makes some very good points. So anyone that sees this and can pass it on would be greatly appreciated..after all you are merely a mouse until your voice can be heard.
